Solar Supporters Tell Arizona Public Service To End Shady Campaigns And Step
Into The Light
(PHOENIX) Many
Arizonans from across the state converged on APS’ corporate headquarters to
deliver a simple message: kick the ‘dirty money' habit and quit trying to
install your favorite candidates on the Arizona Corporation Commission led by
Doug Little. Carrying shade umbrellas and protest signs, solar supporters joined TUSK (Tell Utilities Solar Won’t be Killed) in a protest calling on APS to come clean about funding outside groups to attack pro-solar candidates, and to get its preferred candidates elected to the Arizona Corporation Commission.
So far, APS has dodged questions about its political spending despite repeated requests from the public. In 2013, they were ultimately revealed to have lied about millions in political spending.
APS has sought solar taxes through the Corporation Commission and supports an Arizona Department of Revenue imposed property tax on leased rooftop solar systems, a position opposed by the vast majority of Republicans and Arizonans.
The Arizona Department of Revenue has declined to provide details of a retirement party recently held for its deputy director. The party was held at the Arizona Center and attended by APS employees.
In addition to protestors, rally attendees included ‘Mr. APS’ and ‘Dog Little’, who are featured in a TV commercial now running statewide.

T.U.S.K. believes that rooftop solar is similar to a charter school—it provides a competitive alternative to the monopoly. Monopoly utilities aren’t known for reducing costs or for driving business innovation, but the solar industry is. Solar companies have a track record of aggressive cost reduction. The more people use rooftop solar, the less power they need to buy from the utilities. Energy independence means smaller profits for the utilities, so they are doing everything they can to stop the spread of independent solar.
