Jay
Sekulow, whose American Center for Law and Justice is representing the groups, said
the "IRS and the federal government are not going to get away with this
unlawful targeting of conservative groups,” and the "lawsuit sends a very
powerful message to the IRA and the Obama Administration – including the White
House: Americans are not going to be bullied and intimidated by our
government.”
According
to NBC News, the "suit asks for a declaratory judgment that the
defendants," including Lois Lerner, the embattled chief of the tax-exempt
division “unlawfully delayed and obstructed” applications for tax-exempt
status.
The
lawsuit also "asks for monetary damages, protection for the plaintiffs
from further IRS targeting and tax-exempt status for 10 of the conservative
groups with applications still outstanding."
Sekulow
said contrary to what the White House and top IRS officials have claimed, he
has proof requests for information about some of the groups he is representing
came from IRS headquarters in Washington and that the targeting continued long
after the White House and the IRS claimed
it stopped in May of 2012. 25 Tea Parties already sueing, more could follow:
