OVERSEAS SECURITY ADVISORY COUNCIL- WARNING TO US CITIZENS

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica and the National Weather Service have upgraded the previous Tropical Storm Warning for Jamaica to a Hurricane Warning. Tropical Storm Sandy is currently 275 miles (440 kilometers) south-southwest of Kingston and is expected to approach Jamaica's mainland early Wednesday, October 24. Maximum sustained winds are now 50 mph (85 km/h) with stronger gusts. Rain and strong winds are expected to increase over Jamaica over the next 24 hours, with the likelihood of reaching Category 1 hurricane strength by Wednesday morning with wind speeds of over 74 mph (119 km/h). The storm is not currently forecast to move towards the Cayman Islands but residents should stay aware of the storm's track. more...

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, FL reported this morning that Tropical Storm Sandy is currently growing stronger. A tropical storm watch has been issued for the central Bahamas, including Cat Island, the Exumas, Long Island, Rum Cay, and San Salvador, and for the southeastern Bahamas, including the Acklins, Crooked Island, Long Cay, the Inaguas, Mayaguana, and the Ragged Islands. The Embassy advises U.S. citizens that we have recently added the provinces of Hatay, Kilis, Gaziantep, and Șanlıurfa to the list of provinces in southeast Turkey for which special permission is required for any necessary official or unofficial travel by U.S. government employees. The other restricted provinces are Şırnak, Diyarbakır, Van, Siirt, Muș, Mardin, Batman, Bingöl, Tunceli, Hakkâri, Bitlis and Elaziğ. U.S government employees are required to take special precautions when traveling in these provinces, to include consulting with local security officials on current threats. more...
