Dr. Ada Fisher
The willingness of folks to consider selective abortions
which eliminate female fetuses is a pox on mankind. This preference of male
children over females says to women, we are only important to furthering the
human race not for our inherent value as human beings. That the Democratic
party refuses to allow the banning of such selective abortions in this country
is unfortunate. This allowance for some cultures which are supposed to follow
the US Constitution when on our soil still gives males more value for life than
females. This ranks as the epitome of sexism and is the ultimate war on women.
Prince William and Princess Catherine of Cambridge have
sought to put an end to the preference of first born males in ascending the
ruling throne of England. In Judaism, your religious identity is determined by
your maternal line as it was with Mary to Jesus. Too many customs as well as
ethnic and religious practices continue to subjugate women forgetting that
without us, humankind could not continue. And yet our inherent right to live is
often suppressed when our uterine usefulness as other than life’s incubator is
denied.
I firmly believe that the government and others should
neither practice medicine nor interfere in the doctor patient relationship. But
for me as a physician, I can’t find any inherent value or medical reasoning in
abortions which eliminate female fetuses in preference to males.
In my dreams
for my granddaughter, nieces, great nieces and women of the world, I still live
for the day when the creed of this nation will equally apply to women and we
will not be judged by the color of our skin, while our character will matter
and equality of opportunity in education, jobs, pay, etc. will not be denied
us.
When I see
female rabbis, ministers and others in fields where we have been previously
shunned, I can rejoice. Every time I see a family business where the daughter
is in charge I want to spend just a bit more of my money there. To those
fortunate appreciative men, who are the brothers of sisters, fathers of
daughters and our protectors and guardians, we give thanks for your being there
and letting us know how important we are to you.
Happy Father’s
Day!!!
