BARBARA ON THE ROAD HAS LEFT TEXAS

LEAVING TEXAS HEADED NORTHWEST...
My grandson graduation over and all of his “stuff” bought for college and little red truck back in spiffy condition, part of my Texas family picked me up and we hit the road. Heading northwest to meet up with “Hair on Fire’s” tech support Charles Long. Our destination Index, Washington but along the way we made a few sightseeing stops along the way.

We missed ALLIANCE, Neb. -- A 14-hour standoff with a gunman at a pharmacy ended with the suspect's death, the Nebraska State Patrol said early Wednesday. We drove through but didn’t stop.
Our first night was in Grand Island, Nebraska we had dinner at Uncle Ed’s Steak House food was good but the main course ‘DESSERTS’ was yuck can you believe hot cheese cake.
Onward to Custer, South Dakota where we spent the second night and visited Mount Rushmore. As an aside to ease your concerns, there isn’t room for Obama to be added to Mount Rushmore unless it’s on the backside.
The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore near Keystone,South Dakota, in the United States. Sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum, Mount Rushmore features 60-foot (18 m) sculptures of the heads of former United States presidents (in order from left to right)George WashingtonThomas JeffersonTheodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.[1] The entire memorial covers 1,278.45 acres (5.17 km2)[2] and is 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level.[3] The tallest mountain in the region is Harney Peak (7,242 feet or 2,207 metres).

When we crossed the Continental Divide we saw Our Lady of the Rockies stands 90 feet tall and in the likeness of Mary, Mother of Jesus, sits atop the Continental Divide 8510 ft. above sea level overlooking Butte, Montana. It is the United States’ largest Madonna and the second largest statue. The statue was built by volunteers using donated materials to honor women everywhere, especially mothers. The base is 8,510 feet above sea level and 3,500 feet above the town. The statue is lit and visible at night. The design for the statue was engineered by Laurien Eugene Riehl. He was a retired engineer for the Anaconda Company who donated his engineering skills to the project.
Onward winding our way to the first leg of our destination, Index, Washington to visit with Charles Long my tech support for “Hair on Fire” News Talk Radio Show and for Joe to go fishing.

Along the way we saw Dry Falls Once the world’s largest waterfall, it’s difficult not to believe in the supernatural when you stand atop this great canyon and take in the sheer expanses of Dry Falls. A staggering 3.5 miles of vertical cliffs drop 400 feet to quiet pools of Dry Falls Lake, an ancient channel of the Columbia River. A remarkable story of lava and ice over millions of years formed this ravine, among one of the greatest catastrophic floods of the Pleistocene times (about one million years ago).Dry Falls is a 3.5 mile long scalloped precipice in central Washington, on the opposite side of the Upper Grand Coulee from theColumbia River, and at the head of the Lower Grand Coulee. Ten times the size of Niagara, Dry Falls is thought to be the greatest known waterfall that ever existed. According to the current geological model, catastrophic flooding channeled water at 65 miles per hour through the Upper Grand Coulee and over this 400-foot (120 m) rock face at the end of the last ice age. At this time, it is estimated that the flow of the falls was ten times the current flow of all the rivers in the world combined.

We reached Index and our home for a couple of days.
