Cherny Launches Bid for Congress
‘We can put Washington to work for Arizona families’
PHOENIX – Former Clinton White House aide and Arizona prosecutor Andrei Cherny launched his bid for Congress today, and said he’ll fight the special interest takeover in Washington to put government back on the side of the middle class.
Cherny released a video to make the announcement, which can be viewed here. A complete transcript of Cherny’s video is below. VIEW VIDEO

His Web site is available at www.AndreiforArizona.com.
“The problem isn’t that Washington’s not working,” he said. “It’s that it’s not working for us. The truth is that Washington works great for the people with the campaign cash and the connections. Some big corporations don’t pay a dime in taxes while Congress tries to raise taxes on the middle class. We can change that but it won’t happen with politics as usual or the usual politicians.”

Cherny said the armies of lobbyists who control Congress have made advanced their own interests at the expense of middle class families – and that as a result, many are stuck in place or falling behind. He is running on his unique 15-year track record of delivering real results for the middle class.

Cherny will run in Arizona’s Ninth Congressional District – a new competitive district made up of north and central Phoenix, Arcadia, Ahwatukee, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and south Scottsdale.

About Andrei Cherny

Andrei Cherny is running for Congress to put our government back on the side of Arizona’s families. In Congress, he’ll stand up for the trampled middle class. He’ll hold Wall Street accountable. He’ll fight for investments in education, innovation, and clean energy so we can make Arizona “the Solar State.” And we know he’ll do it – because he’s been doing it all his life.

Andrei knows first-hand about the challenges facing middle class families. Growing up in a small upstairs apartment, he watched his immigrant parents struggle every day to make it into the middle class. “But unlike many families today, we weren’t alone,” says Andrei. “Unemployment benefits let us pay the rent and put food on the table when there was no work to be found. And because the people who came before me created public schools and public libraries and Pell Grants, I could go from being a kid whose parents didn’t speak much English to working in the White House for the president of the United States.”

‘Protecting Arizona Families from Corporate Crooks’

Andrei has dedicated his life to fighting for the values and interests of other middle class families. When home mortgage fraud artists schemed against Arizona families, Andrei took them on. As an Assistant Attorney General under Terry Goddard, he put corporate crooks, human traffickers and corrupt public officials where they belong – behind bars.
In 2007 – before the financial crisis took our economy into a tailspin – Andrei saw the need for reform on Wall Street. He joined forces with Elizabeth Warren to launch the push for a consumer watchdog agency to stop mortgage brokers and credit card companies from preying on working families. The forces of reform faced off against the largest army of Wall Street lobbyists ever assembled – and won. President Barack Obama signed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau into law on July 21, 2010.

‘A Progressive Reformer for the New Economy’

Working in the White House with Bill Clinton and Al Gore, Andrei was part of a team that passed the first balanced budget in 30 years, helped create millions of new jobs and made federal student loans more affordable for working families.

Since leaving the White House, Andrei has been a leader in the national debate over America’s economic future – putting forward new ideas to turn our economy around and make America more competitive. He’s served as a Senior Fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and at the Center for American Progress. In 1999, he wrote The Next Deal to offer a forward-thinking vision for our economy. And together with former Labor Secretary Robert Reich and others, he founded Democracy, and think tank and journal dedicated to new ideas for making the 21st century economy work for all Americans.

Andrei’s cutting edge ideas have earned high praise. He has been called a “superstar” by CNN, a “progressive reformer” by Washington Monthly, and one of America’s “top young thinkers” by the New York Times.

‘A Strong Leader for Arizona Democrats’

Andrei has dedicated himself to building a Democratic Party ready to meet the challenges of the future. As the Chair of the Arizona Democratic Party, Andrei stood up to the Russell Pearce Republicans – and led the successful fights to  stop Pearce’s attempt to rewrite birthright citizenship, Tom Horne’s conflicted investigation of the Fiesta Bowl scandal, and Gov. Jan Brewer’s push to impeach the chair of the Independent Redistricting Commission. Under his watch, Arizona Democrats saw their grassroots strength grow and helped elect Democratic mayors in both Phoenix and Tucson for the first time in two decades.

Andrei was the chief negotiator of the 2000 Democratic Party platform on behalf of Al Gore and served as a policy advisor to Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign, where he co-authored the Obama campaign policy book, Change We Can Believe In.

In 2008, he was the author of the bestselling history, The Candy Bombers: The Untold Story of the Berlin Airlift and America's Finest Hour, which was described as like “Stephen Ambrose at his best” by historian Douglas Brinkley.

Following 9/11, Andrei enlisted and served for eight years in the United States Navy reserve. He is an honors graduate of Harvard College and earned his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He serve on the City of Phoenix’s Industrial Development Authority and Commission on Housing and Neighborhoods as well as the board of the Arizona League of Conservation Voters. Andrei and his wife, Stephanie, live with their two children in Phoenix.

Cherny Announcement Video Transcript and Fact Check

The promise of America is that if you work hard enough, you can get ahead. But in neighborhoods like this all across our community, families are struggling. Working longer hours, spending less time with their families, and finding themselves stuck in place or falling behind.

I’ve seen that American promise first hand. I grew up the son of two immigrants in a small upstairs apartment, and I watched them work so hard every single day. But we weren’t alone. When times were tough it was unemployment benefits that put food on the table and helped us pay the rent. And because of public schools and public libraries and Pell Grants I was able to go from being a kid whose parents didn’t speak much English to working in the White House for the president of the United States.

And ever since then I’ve devoted myself to working for families just like mine. In the Clinton White House, we overcame tough opposition to balance the budget and create millions of new jobs. I became an Arizona prosecutor to take on the corporate criminals and mortgage fraud artists and put them where they belong – behind bars.

And with a little known law professor named Elizabeth Warren, we launched the push for the new consumer watchdog agency to stop the mortgage brokers and the credit card companies from preying on working families. We faced off against the biggest army of Wall Street lobbyists ever assembled – and we won.

But today too many politicians have broken faith with the promise of America.

The problem is not that Washington’s not working, it’s that it’s not working for us. [Source: Middle Class May Be Losing Political Influence, The Arizona Republic, Sept. 4, 2011]

But we can put government back on our side again. But I need your help. Because this campaign isn’t about me – its about citizens coming together to do something bigger than ourselves. Rebuilding the ladder of opportunity. Creating jobs by making Arizona the Solar State. Breaking the chain between Wall Street and Washington. Saving the middle class.

It won't happen through politics as usual or the usual politicians. But it can happen. We can make Washington work for the people again. And we can start right here – at home.
