Amigo Airsho: Blue Angels perform for
about
50,000 at Biggs Army Airfield; watch video
Six blue jets twirled skyward, assuming their signature diamond formation
with wings inches apart, and rocketed over the crowd at Fort Bliss' Biggs Army
Airfield.
The Blue Angels had returned to El Paso.
Saturday's Amigo Airsho was the first time the Blue Angels, known as the
Blues, performed in El Paso in 14 years. Organizers said they had worked for two
years to ensure that logistics were in place for the Navy's flight demonstration
squadron.
The Blues' transport plane, a C-130T Hercules nicknamed Fat Albert, started
the show by demonstrating different passes and a backward taxi as ACDC blared
from loudspeakers.
Six F-A/18 jet fighter-bombers then roared off the runway, reaching speeds of
up to 600 mph during upside-down and twisting aerobatic maneuvers.
Dust kicked up as the Blues screeched across the ground then sharply
ascended, leaving contrails in their paths.
About 50,000 people attended the 30th annual Airsho, said Mike Guerra, Airsho board president.
The return of the Blues had a lot to do with that, he added.
"The Blue Angels' shows are absolutely unique," Guerra said. "The grace, the
charisma, the way that they choreograph those are absolutely amazing. It
astonishes me to watch these guys, to see them perform and the precision moves
that they do and how they fly so close together."
