Head of Phoenix Tea Party Hobbits Stands By Phoenix Mayoral Candidate Wes Gullett
By Monica Alonzo Thu., Jul. 28 2011 at 6:16 PM
We've already heard about Senator John McCain calling tea party politicos hobbits yesterday as he ranted before Senate members about debt ceilings and balanced budget amendments.
Well, Wes Harris, the leader of those beloved, hairy-footed small people who live in Middle-earth Phoenix, is backing Wes Gullett, a former McCain operative and Phoenix mayoral candidate.
Harris, founder of the Original North Phoenix Tea Party, first declared in an e-mail that mayor-hopeful Jennifer Wright was part of his "life's blood" and the only candidate who could be supported ... only to later question whether she was even right for the job.
His tea party/hobbit support -- at least for now -- is squarely with Gullett, and we say that makes Gullett a hobbit, too

Downtown Scottsdale residents might call on sheriff for help
Edward Gately - The Arizona Republic - July 29, 2011 09:10 AM
Downtown Scottsdale residents and merchants again are calling on Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio to step in and do something about what they say is ongoing illegal activity associated with patrons of the entertainment district.
The Association to Preserve Downtown Scottsdale's Quality of Life has begun circulating a petition asking the sheriff's office to conduct crime suppression sweeps in Scottsdale for "various unlawful offenses." The group's goal is to collect at least 1,000 signatures and present them to the sheriff by Labor Day, Sept. 5.

Judge unimpressed with state’s arguments in SB1070 countersuit
Jeremy Duda – Arizona Capitol Times - July 28th, 2011

U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton didn’t immediately rule on a motion to dismiss Arizona’s countersuit against the federal government, but left no doubt that she would throw out at least part of the case.
At a hearing Wednesday at the Sandra Day O’Connor United States Courthouse, Bolton picked apart the state’s arguments. Both Bolton and an attorney from the U.S. Department of Justice said the arguments raised in Arizona’s countersuit – filed in response to the federal government’s lawsuit against Senate Bill 1070 – were resolved by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in similar lawsuits filed in the 1990s by Arizona and California.
Judge: No basis for her to issue order to feds to increase border security
Howard Fischer, Capitol Media Services | Posted: Thursday, July 28, 2011 12:03 pm
A federal judge said Thursday there appears to be no legal basis for a request that she order the Obama administration to do more to protect the border.
Judge Susan Bolton noted that the state is requesting that she rule that the federal government is failing in its mandate to protect the country from “invasion.’’ That is based on the contention that Arizona — and the United States — is effectively being invaded by large numbers of illegal immigrants.

Last of Arizona immigration protesters on trial
Amanda Lee Myers – AP – Boston Globe - July 29, 2011
PHOENIX—The president of a national religious organization and five others went on trial Friday in Phoenix a year after they were arrested while protesting Arizona's tough immigration law and a crackdown on illegal immigrants.
The Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Boston-based Unitarian Universalist Association, is charged with a misdemeanor count of failure to obey an order. Morales lives in Arvada, Colo. and Salem, Mass., and was elected as the first Latino president of the association in 2009.

Details emerge of a life of horror for Phoenix girl who died
William Hermann - The Arizona Republic - July 29, 2011 12:00 AM

Ame Deal, a 10-year-old girl who died while stuffed inside a small footlocker, suffered a miserable life and horrific abuse at the hands of the adults who were entrusted with her care, police and court records say.
The child lived in what police described as a hellish, rubbish-strewn south Phoenix home where she survived at the mercy of four adults whose actions, court records say, bordered on torture.

A child's unspeakable end
Laurie Roberts – azcentral.com – July 28, 2011
I write words. It's what I do yet today I find that there are none to properly convey what has happened here in our city to a little girl named Ame, forced into a footlocker and left to suffocate and die.
Horror? It seems such an antiseptic word. Outrage doesn't begin to cover it.
Revulsion probably comes the closest as I read what happened to 10-year-old Ame Deal.

Phoenix twins raise questions over Chandler homicide
Laurie Merrill and Kevin Kennedy -Arizona Republic-12 News - July 28, 2011 07:18 PM

It was a brawl outside a Chandler dance hall that resulted in a homicide, a fleeing suspect who is a twin, and a family in mourning.
Now, nearly half a year later, questions are swirling over whether police arrested the right sibling in connection with the murder.
The homicide took place Feb. 12 at a would-be hip-hop club called Leonardo's Da Vinci Code, which was opened for the first time and has since failed to get a liquor permit. A fight that started inside spilled outside, and more than 100 young adults were swarming, said Chandler Det. Joe Favazzo.

Twin Brothers Complicate Arizona Murder Investigation
LAURA RIPARBELLI – abc News - July 29, 2011

Orlando Nembhard has been in an Arizona since March 28 on murder charges, but he is poised to be released on bail because investigators now aren't certain whether the suspect in jail should be Orlando or his twin brother Brandon.

Orlando Nembhard's bond was lowered from $500,000 to $10,000 on Thursday after it was determined that there wasn't enough evidence to keep Orlando Nembhard in jail for the murder of 19-year-old Sir Xavier Brooks who was shot and killed outside an Arizona nightclub on Feb. 12.

Tom Horne and His Office's Possible Conflict in Redistricting Probe
Stephen Lemons – Phoenix New Times - Thu., Jul. 28 2011 at 6:32 PM

Horne's probe of the AIRC raises a possible, Andrew Thomas-like conflict of interest
In this week's column, I addressed the claims of Arizona Tea Party members, and some Republicans, concerning the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission.
One of these claims is that the AIRC may have violated Arizona's open meetings law, as well as state procurement procedures in the pick of the commission's mapping consultant Strategic Telemetry.
