Arizona voters registering as independents more often
by Emily Holden - Jul. 27, 2011 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic
Arizona voters without a party preference continue to eclipse Democrats in number, according to new registration figures from the Secretary of State's Office. Independents outnumbered Democrats for the first time in January.
From April 1 until July 1, 13,149 voters registered for the first time or re-registered without a party affiliation, bringing the total independent voters statewide to 1,043,649.
Republican registration slipped 3,243 to 1,138,802, and Democratic registration fell by 7,892 to 999,232. Democrats haven't numbered fewer than 1 million since August 2008, Secretary of State spokesman Matt Roberts said.
"I think you're certainly seeing frustration, especially when you get into these situations of deadlock, when it seems like no progress is being made," Democratic Party spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson said.
Party-registration numbers fluctuate often, and experts attribute changes to backlashes against the party holding the presidency, economic factors and voter-migration patterns.
But Johnson said there's something more to this trend: Arizona voters are sick of polarized politics. Read more: http://www.azcentral.com/community/pinal/articles/2011/07/27/20110727arizona-voter-registration-more-independents.html#ixzz1TLKAkRqI

Phoenix mayor candidate Mattox: I stand behind city
by Lynh Bui - Jul. 27, 2011 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic
While the popular campaign rhetoric this election season is to bash how city government operates and question the influence of unions at City Hall, Claude Mattox is standing firm behind Phoenix.
With the endorsement of the firefighters union and more than 11 years on the City Council, Mattox is running on the belief that the city is headed in the right direction and needs a leader to build on its success.
"I'm proud of what we're doing in the city of Phoenix," Mattox said during a candidate forum in April. "We're streamlining our city but still providing services to residents."

Maguire used to work with the former Downtown Scottsdale Partnership to put on numerous street events on Fifth Avenue. The partnership was a tax-based assessment district funded through merchants in the downtown area.
After the partnership was disbanded about five years ago, Maguire discontinued his Fifth Avenue events.
