HORNE AUTHORIZES PROBE INTO INDEPENDENT REDISTRICTING COMMISSION
PHOENIX (Thursday, July 21, 2011) -- Attorney General Tom Horne has authorized his office to conduct an initial investigation of the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission based on reports that raise questions about the Commission’s compliance with Arizona’s Open Meeting Law and procurement laws when it recently entered into a contract with Strategic Telemetry to provide mapping consultant services.
“I need to emphasize very clearly that this is an initial investigation that will attempt to determine if any violations actually occurred,” Horne said. “I am concerned about reports that have raised questions about some of the procedural actions taken by the commission, and I am committed to finding out whether those concerns warrant any further investigation. If this initial investigation finds that laws have been violated, we will proceed accordingly.” http://www.azag.gov/

Political endorsements are flying off the shelves in Phoenix, where voters will elect a new mayor and five City Council members on August 30.
Among the latest is the Sonoran Citizens Improvement Association's expected endorsement of Bryan Jeffries, the Mesa firefighter appointed to fill the City Council seat vacated by former Councilwoman Peggy Neely after she announced her bid for Phoenix mayor.
Now, he's running to represent Phoenix residents living in District 2 for the next four years. His challengers are David Jones and Jim Waring.

Cox Communications vs. Joel Fox Settlement Pending Over E-mail Release, but Judge Dismisses Case Against State Investigators
By Ray Stern Wed., Jul. 20 2011 at 4:26 PM
Cox Communications has agreed to settle a lawsuit launched by Captain Joel Fox of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office over the release of his "love letter" e-mails.
Fox filed the federal complaint against Cox on the same day that New Times published excerpts from the emotional expressions of man-love between him and his supervisor, one of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's now-fired top aides, Larry Black. At the same time, Fox filed a similar, but separate complaint in federal court against former Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard and three AG's office employees.
Both Fox and Black are key figures in the "SCA" campaign-finance violation scandal once probed by criminal investigators at the state Attorney General's Office -- and now being reviewed by the feds. We explored the sordid case thoroughly in our April 14 feature article, Love Connection

Arizona launched a website Wednesday to accept donations to pay for fencing along the Mexico border, and a supporter says the $3.8 million people donated to defend the state’s 2010 immigration enforcement law could be just a taste of what to expect.
Gov. Jan Brewer’s legal-defense site for the law known as SB1070 raised money for “an intangible service — you’re paying for a lawyer,” said state Sen. Steve Smith. “This, you can taste and smell what you’re getting — you’re paying for a secure border.”
The launch of build the border fence.com was keyed to Wednesday being the date most new laws passed during the Legislature’s 2011 regular session go into effect.
Smith, who sponsored the legislation authorizing the fence project, said Tuesday that his initial goal is $50 million.
“It’s not my end goal. If we can raise $50 million, we’re off to a fabulous start,” the first-term Republican said. http://azcapitoltimes.com/news/2011/07/20/arizona-launches-site-to-net-cash-for-border-fence/
