Conservative members of the State Board of Education achieved a landmark victory by prevailing over liberals and race-based pressure groups to draft a new set of standards for textbooks used in our public schools. They stood up for common sense and fair, unbiased teaching of American history, and leftists have been complaining about it for the past several months, in hysterical terms. To hear liberals tell it, these new standards will condemn Texas to a new Dark Age. Here's a typical account of a March SBOE meeting from a highly influential liberal blogger, Charles Johnson:
"Texas BOE Member Walks Out As Racists Take Over - Texas State Board of Education member Mary Helen Berlanga walked out of themeeting today, in protest over the Republican religious fanatics' attempts to turn sociology into a "whites only" course." That quote shows just how much contempt liberals have for conservatives. To leftists, people with traditional values are nothing but "racists" and "religious fanatics" who are entitled to absolutely no respect. By now, it's pretty obvious that to
liberals, all conservatives are "racists", and they're quick to toss this slur around no matter how baseless the charge. In the case of the new textbook standards, it's especially outrageous. Under the previous standards, textbooks discussed 92 people of historical importance, and only 11 of them were non-white. Under the new standards approved by the conservative majority, 396 names are included, and 99 of them are non-white. In other words, non-whites went from being 11 percent of the people featured to 25 percent. Since non-whites are about 25 percent of the current
population of America, and historically have made up an even smaller percentage, this is hardly downplaying their significance in US history. To call it a "whites only" course is nothing but the worst kind of libel.
