September 17, 2009 – Members of the House Missile Defense Caucus today gave the following statements upon hearing that President Barack Obama has officially chosen to abandon plans for the European Missile Defense site, including the deployment of 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic.
Congressman Trent Franks, founder and co-chair of the House Missile Defense Caucus:"The President has disgraced this nation by breaking his word to loyal and courageous allies in the Czech Republic and Poland. We have become the greatest nation in history because our word has meant something. Today has fundamentally altered that paradigm. President Obama promised on the campaign trail that he would support missile defense that is 'pragmatic and cost-effective.' Unfortunately, this is not just another one of his many broken campaign promises. According to the Congressional Budget Office and the Institute for Defense Analysis the Administration's alternative missile defense systems for defense of Europe are far more costly and would not provide close to the effectiveness of Ground Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) at protecting the U.S. homeland and our European allies. The President has ignored both of those objective measurements-- cost as well as effectiveness-- which seems to be the pattern for this Administration. He has also endangered this and coming generations from a possible missile attack from Iran or other rogue States in the Middle East who may soon attain ballistic missile capability. Nukes treaty gives GOP weapon on missile defense

Senate Republicans see a new agreement forged between President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev as an opportunity to force Democrats’ hand on a major security issue: missile defense.
Sixty-seven senators, or two-thirds of those present, must agree to ratify any deal seeking to reduce nuclear weapons between the two nations, giving Senate Republicans, who only control 40 seats, rare leverage.
The high bar for ratifying treaties will put pressure on Obama to finish construction of a missile shield in Eastern Europe. At the very least, it will make it very difficult for the president to limit that shield in exchange for Russian concessions on the size of its nuclear stockpile. Republicans are already demanding that Obama press Russia into allowing a missile defense system in Eastern Europe in return for the U.S. agreeing to reduce its nuclear arsenal to between 1,500 and 1,675 warheads.
“I don’t want the Russians to get something and we get nothing. I don’t know what we’re getting out of this,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), an influential member of the Armed Services Committee.

The big story at the close of the week is Obama’s abandonment of the missile defense shield. To understand the implications of this, imagine if Walter Mondale had won in 1984 and had decided to abandon SDI aka Star Wars. The result would have been a decisive American retreat in Europe, one that would have seriously strengthened the Soviet position and might have prevented the collapse of the USSR.
Except Russia today is stronger and more aggressive than it was in 1984, and Putin has demonstrated his determination to retake former Soviet territories with his invasion of Georgia and by repeatedly amping up the tension with Ukraine. The missile defense shield represented an American commitment to defend the liberated nations of Europe.
